As a representation of the United States' objectives for a peaceful future in the wake of World War I, the Peace Dollar is an important piece of American numismatic history. Hence, the Peace Dollar was a commemorative coin that the United States Mint minted from 1921 to 1935 to mark the conclusion of the Great War.
History of the Peace Dollar
After the devastating effects of World War I, the citizens of the United States of America demanded an emblem of Peace in the form of currency. The renowned US Mint introduced the Peace Dollar in 1921 as a symbol of Peace. The Peace Silver Dollars were the last circulation coins from the US Mint struck in silver. Farran Zerbe, a famous numismatist and coin dealer, recommended the Peace Dollar in 1918.
Due to the Pittman Act of 1918, the US Mint was obliged to produce a vast number of silver coins! A design competition was held to finalize the design for the sanctioned Peace Dollar. The well-known and admired Italian sculptor Anthony De Francisci won the competition. After the US Mint’s Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon approved it, the minting began in 1921 and continued until 1928, again from 1934 to 1935, and finally revived as a commemorative in 2021.
Design of the Silver Peace Dollar
It's said that Anthony De Francisci couldn't get a model for his design and thus had to design the coin while his wife, Teresa, modeled. The obverse side of the Silver Peace Dollar featured the effigy of Goddess Liberty depicting her head and neck. Liberty wears a radiate crown with her hair flowing gracefully. The inscriptions on the obverse are "LIBERTY", the US motto, "IN GOD WE TRVST", and the year of the issue below the portrait. Anthony De Francisci emphasizes the roots of Roman literature with the replacement of "U" with "V" in the word 'TRUST.'
The reverse design directly depicts the coin's purpose and motto. The American eagle is perched on a rock as it clenches olive branches in its talons. The rising sun and its rays are seen in the backdrop. The legend "PEACE" is imprinted on the rock, along with the country of issue, the US motto, and the face value as "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. E PLURIBUS UNUM. ONE DOLLAR."
The US Mint had facilities that produced the Peace Dollar, one factor that impacted the silver coin's value. So, where is the mint mark on the silver Peace Dollar? The mint mark on the Peace Dollar is located on the reverse at the end of the eagle's tail at the lower left. The mint mark would vary among Denver (D), San Francisco (S), and Philadelphia (no mint mark).
