Beautiful and Historic Design
The Silver Libertad coins are more than a good bullion investment coin, it also bears a beautiful and historic design. Centered on the coin’s obverse is a magnificently crafted, relief design of Mexico’s National Shield, the official seal, and the current Mexican Coat of Arms. The shield features an image of a Mexican golden eagle, perched on a prickly pear cactus, with a rattlesnake dangling from its clenched beak. Closely encircling the central shield is the inscription, “Estados Unidos Mexicanos” (United Mexican States). Ten distinct, and smaller shield versions, each representing a different period of the country’s history, fully encircle the outer rim.
The reverse image features the Winged Victory figure standing on a pedestal. Her beautiful wings are outstretched high above her. The Winged Victory is a symbol of Mexican independence, which hails back to the Mexican Revolution. The actual statue stands proudly in the center of Mexico City. Behind her rise are the twin Mexican volcanoes, Iztaccíhuatl and Popocatépetl. Inscriptions include the coin’s weight, purity, mint year, and the Mexican Mint’s mark: “OM.”
History
The Silver Mexican Libertad was introduced in 1982, with an original mintage of 1,049,680. The coins are minted in BU .999 fine silver and continue to maintain strong global popularity as a bullion investment. Silver Libertads were produced only in a 1 oz denomination from 1982 to 1990. Beginning in 1991 fractional sizes were added, including 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz. In 1996, two larger sizes were added, 2 oz and 5 oz. Mintages on the fractionals and larger sizes have historically been quite low. A Proof finish has also been produced since 1982. These have mainly been for collectors of fine bullion coins. The brilliance of these coins is magnificent! Both the 1/10 oz and fractional Proof sizes have had very low mintage, as have the 2 and 5 oz sizes.
